Bill Belichick suggests Vince Lombardi Super Bowl trophy should be renamed after New England Patriots legend
Surprisingly, Bill Belichick thinks the Super Bowl trophy should be renamed.
The head coach of UNC football believes that a guy who was instrumental in the 72-year-old’s six Super Bowl victories with the New England Patriots should be honored with a new name for the Lombardi Trophy.
Belichick expressed his belief that the NFL ought to rename the Super Bowl after Tom Brady during his weekly appearance on the Let’s Go podcast, which he co-hosts with Jim Gray.
“Maybe they should name it the Brady Trophy,” he replied. “He won seven of them.”
The remark was made amid a discussion about how crucial coaches and players are to winning it all.
Belichick believes that without talented players, even the world’s top coaches won’t win a championship.

The 72-year-old then enumerated a long list of individuals he coached while he was with the New York Giants, Cleveland Browns, and Patriots, claiming they should be given full credit for his successes.
“Those are guys that won the games, man,” the coach, who has won eight Super Bowls, mentioned.
“I failed to make a tackle. I didn’t kick anyone. Adam Vinatieri was the one who kicked in four inches of snow.
“As a coach, you have to have good players; you want to give your players a chance to win,” Belichick said, praising NFL great Bill Parcells.
“You want them to put them in a position where if they go out there and play well, they’ll have a chance to win.”
Since 1970, when Vince Lombardi won the first two Super Bowls with the Green Bay Packers, the trophy has been named in his honor.
No one in NFL history has won more Super Bowls than Belichick.
He led the Patriots to six victories and led the Giants to two as defensive coordinator.
Brady, the only player in NFL history to win at least seven titles, including those before the Super Bowl, was credited by Belichick.
After departing Belichick and New England the year before, Brady earned his final championship with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020.
The legendary pair doesn’t seem to be at odds, especially in light of Belichick’s recent remarks of giving the honor to the 47-year-old.
Brady is currently a co-owner of the Las Vegas Raiders and an NFL game analyst for Fox.
After a season away from the NFL, Belichick has taken over as head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels.
