Boxing hero, 63, suffering with brain disease as son issues heartbreaking plea for support

In a poignant appeal, boxing champion Donald Curry’s son disclosed that his father had a brain illness.

Traumatic Encephalopathy Syndrome has been identified in Curry, a two-weight class champion.

This neurological disorder is frequently brought on by repetitive head trauma.

“I’m reaching out to the boxing community to ask for assistance in finding a long-term healthcare facility for my dad,” Curry’s son Donovan wrote on social media.

“My dad was formally diagnosed with Traumatic Encephalopathy Syndrome (TES) after undergoing a brain scan at the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health a few years ago with Chuck Williams’ assistance.

“Judgement, thinking, memory, and behavior problems, especially poor impulse control, have been brought on by this disorder.

“With the help of his late trainer, Paul Reyes, who passed away recently, he was receiving treatment at a fantastic church facility in Fort Worth for a while.

However, my dad had to leave because of fights and rule violations. At the moment, he is lodging in a Fort Worth motel.

“We are looking for an institution that treats patients with problems similar to my dad’s, preferably one that is free of charge.

“Do not hesitate to get in touch if you are aware of any facilities, organizations, or services that might be able to assist.

What is CTE?

Chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, is a brain degeneration brought on by repeated head injuries.

According to the Boston University CTE Center, other factors, such as genetics, might be involved, but the precise causes have not yet been identified.

CTE is a relatively uncommon illness that can only be identified by a brain autopsy.

It is most frequently observed in athletes, such as fighters and football players.

Memory loss, disorientation, poor judgment, anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, and progressive dementia are some of the signs of CTE.

Years or even decades after the previous brain trauma, these symptoms may start to show.

“Thank you for your time and support during this challenging time.”

Curry famously fought Terry Norris, Mike McCallum, and Lloyd Honeyghan while holding the welterweight and light-middleweight belts.

After losing to Emmett Linton in his final bout in 1997, the American retired with a 34-6 record.

After an incredible career, Curry, now 63, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2019.

However, it wasn’t until 2021 that Curry’s sons began to worry that their well-known combative father might have CTE.
