Breaking the Law! County Official in Texas Admits to Using Official Car for Human Smuggling
A Texas crime victims coordinator for the Starr County District Attorney’s Office has pled guilty to using a county car to smuggle immigrants into the United States.
Bernice Garza pled guilty on Friday to conspiracy to transfer unauthorized people inside the United States, according to KRGV.
Magali Rosa and Juan Antonio Charles were also arrested as part of the investigation and have pled guilty to people smuggling charges, according to the BBC. Garza was arrested in December 2022 after a traffic stop in Victoria County revealed that the car registered in the county was making “numerous unauthorized trips to the Houston area,” according to the criminal complaint.

According to authorities, Magali Rosa drove the vehicle, with Garza and Charles as passengers. Rosa allegedly tried to claim that Garza was the Starr County district attorney during the stop, but she eventually admitted to making over 40 smuggling trips from Rio Grande City to Houston in the official car.
“This investigation is an example of no one being above the law, and our office taking swift action in eliminating public corruption,” the DA’s office stated in a statement following the arrests.

Garza was quickly fired from the DA’s office, and the four migrants in the vehicle at the time of the stop were turned over to the US. Border patrol.
Garza and Charles are scheduled to be sentenced on September 28, while Magali Rosa will be sentenced on June 27.
