DETROIT (FOX 2):According to Detroit police, a father was taken into custody Tuesday morning after his son allegedly grabbed his gun and shot himself.

“The father claimed he had his gun under his pillow while he was sleeping on the couch,” stated Deputy Chief Arnold Williams of the Detroit Police Department. “Somehow, the child got hold of the firearm and ended up wounding himself in his right hand with the firearm, shooting himself in the right hand.”

While the father was taken into custody, the youngster was taken to the hospital in stable condition. Just before 10 a.m. on Tuesday, the event took place in their home on Russell Street in Detroit’s east side.

Terrence Bernoudy, a neighbor, stated, “I absolutely understand the point of having a firearm in the home, but you have to follow the rules.”

The requirements are straightforward: those firearms must be locked up if there are minors present.

“We tell every parent not only should you make sure your weapon is secure, locked and placed in a position where a child can t get to it, but if you fail to do so, it s a crime,” Williams stated.

For this reason, the child’s father was arrested and his mother is in the hospital.

Veronica, a neighbor, is familiar with the family.

“The family is pleasant. He works, looks after the children, and is the mother of the newborn. It must be something since he picks them up, takes the girl to school, and keeps the baby,” she claimed.

“You know I don t really want to speak on what should happen with the parents because I don t know the situation or the circumstance,” Bernoudy replied. “It s definitely not good.”

Fortunately, the youngster will live this time. youngster protective services will be contacted to evaluate the family situation.

The Wayne County Prosecutors Office will hear the case from Detroit police.
