As part of the Inspire Change Initiative, the Detroit Lions held a football clinic for their youngest supporters.
“Helping to develop youth so that they can achieve their full potential is one of the things that we’re so passionate about,” said Roxanne Caine of the Detroit Lions Foundation. “And what better way to grow the game than through the love for football.”
Students were brought to the stadium by six area non-profit groups to meet long snapper Hogan Hatten, play with Roary, and learn the game from Lions coaches.
“I believe that seeing us now is more crucial. “We see that we are all regular people outside of the uniforms, and we want to be a part of the community just as much as you want us to,” Hatten added.
Brandon Hudson of FOX 2 questioned, “What does it mean to now be in the position to give back to these kids?”
“It is truly a boon. I’ve always wanted to do it because I’ve always wanted to represent myself in athletics to the best of my abilities,” Hatten added. “I never thought I d make it this far, but now that I have, it s really fun to share the dream and tell everyone it s possible.”
At this clinic, there are around 100 children.
In 2017, the NFL launched its “Inspire Change” campaign to link the league to social justice issues. Since then, teams have given local organizations grants and donations totaling over $300 million. Beyond the financial gain, it has provided youngsters with unforgettable experiences, such as those provided by Athletes for Charity.
