(FOX 2):A new proposal for a $248 million increase in gas rates has been submitted by Consumers Energy to the Michigan Public Service Commission.

The 10.8% rise would take effect in late 2025 if it were authorized.

The request is made months after a $35 million increase approved by the commission in July went into effect on October 1st of this year.

According to the utility’s submission last week, the proposed rate increase is required for improvements to its natural gas infrastructure.

“Critical capital” improvements are being requested in order to “provide customers safe, reliable, affordable, and increasingly clean natural gas service.”

Its infrastructure projects for maintaining its storage fields, repairing gas wells, replacing outdated equipment, and adhering to regulations are some of the elements that require money.
