CRACKDOWN ON CRIME! Authorities Apprehend Three More in Connection to Savannah Gunfight

Three more suspects in a gunfight that injured 11 people in a public area in Savannah’s downtown historic district have been apprehended, authorities said Friday.

Four people have now been charged in connection with the May 18 shootings. No one was killed, but police claimed 10 people were hit by gunshots, and another was injured by glass from a shattered car window. According to police, all of the patients were treated in hospitals before being released.

According to Savannah Police Chief Lenny Gunther, a late-night quarrel between two women prompted numerous gunmen to start fire in Ellis Square, which is surrounded by restaurants and bars in a tourist-friendly nightlife district.

Samira Kenny, 29, Jordan Caleb Jones, 20, and Cazare Cooper, 19, were arrested Thursday in connection with the Ellis Square shootings, according to a police statement. All were charged with aggravated assault – five counts for Kenny and four each for Jones and Cooper. All three were charged with carrying a weapon while committing a crime.

Cooper also faces a gun possession accusation in a separate felony case in which he is also accused with theft and narcotics possession, according to Chatham County Superior Court documents. According to records, Cooper was released from jail on a $5,000 bond in January 2023.

Chase Carnes, Cooper’s attorney in that case, did not immediately respond to phone or email messages on Friday. Online jail and court records showed no attorneys named for Kenny or Jones. The Associated Press could not discover phone numbers that corresponded to the addresses given in court filings.

Another suspect, 20-year-old William Anthony Mitchell, was detained last week and charged with four charges of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm while committing a felony.

Mitchell was already facing felony charges for possessing crack cocaine with intent to distribute in an unrelated case. According to Chatham County State Court records, he was freed from jail on April 18, after a judge granted him bond.
