Daniel Jones makes next NFL team decision after quitting New York Giants – but will still be backup QB
Quarterback Daniel Jones has signed with an NFL team following his release from the New York Giants.
With six weeks remaining in the NFL regular season, the 27-year-old Jones called himself “Danny Dimes” and decided to be a backup quarterback for a team that was in the running for the playoffs.
According to Ian Rapaport, Tom Pelissero, and Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network, Jones signed a contract with the Minnesota Vikings on Wednesday.
Less than a week has passed since the Giants cut the 2019 first-round pick after five and a half seasons.
According to the source, Jones will join quarterback Brett Rypien, Nick Mullens, and starting Sam Darnold with the Minnesota practice squad.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Jones agreed to a one-year contract worth $375,000 for the remainder of the season.

If another starting quarterback is hurt in the next three weeks, the 27-year-old who is starting on the Vikings’ practice squad can join with another team.
Following a terrible 2–8 start, Jones was benched by the Giants last Monday.
The Giants therefore demoted Jones to the fourth-string quarterback position, made Tommy DeVito the starter, and promoted Tim Boyle to the practice squad.
The two parties parted ways when Jones asked for a release last week.
With 70 touchdown passes and 47 interceptions, the Duke graduate had a dismal 22-44-1 record at the end of his time with the Giants.
In 2022, Jones did guide the Giants to an unexpected postseason run.
During the wild-card victory versus his current team, the Vikings, in January 2023, he also recorded one of his best career performances, completing 24 of 35 passes for 301 yards, two touchdowns, and 78 rushing yards.
In the offseason of 2023, Jones received a four-year, $160 million contract deal following the campaign.
Over the following two seasons, he would post 10 passing touchdowns against 13 interceptions.
The Giants decided not to risk an injury that would result in a $23 million guarantee in Jones’ 2025 contract by benching him.
Additionally, after removing Jones, they will face a dead cap charge of $22.2 million in 2025 rather than $45.2 million.
Jones was waived on Monday, but the Giants still owe the majority of the $11.8 million remaining on his contract.
With a 9-2 record going into Week 13, the Vikings are led by former New York Jets signal-caller Darnold.
In contrast, the Giants are 2-9 and recently suffered a crushing 30-7 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, in which DeVito was sacked four times and failed to score any touchdowns.
Following the season, Jones will be a free agent.

J.J. McCarthy, a 2024 first-round pick, will be Minnesota’s only quarterback with a contract for the season.
McCarthy is anticipated to be healthy for the 2025 season after suffering a season-ending meniscus injury in his right knee during the preseason.
