DC Recognizes Day Care Staff’s Bravery in Rescuing Children from Anacostia Gas Blast
DEBARYLIFE – A D.C. daycare center’s owner and employees were recognized as heroes on Saturday for sparing sixteen children from the effects of a gas explosion that occurred in January.
The daycare facility received accolades from Mayor Muriel Bowser and DC Fire commanders in appreciation of their life-saving efforts.
The owner of Baby Einstein Child Development Center, Regina Snead, stated, “We train for this every month. We hope that if someone was in that situation with our children, they would get them out safely.”
The Anacostia neighborhood’s 1200 block of Marion Barry Avenue SE was severely damaged by a massive explosion on January 18. Among the destroyed structures was a daycare center housed in a building that was once a convenience store.

As soon as they smelled gas, Snead and her staff fled the premises immediately to ensure that all 16 children, ages 2 to 4, were safely out.
Two prizes were given to the daycare for its efforts to safeguard the youngest citizens of the District.

“I want all parents who send their children there to know that they are well-prepared and perform well,” stated John Donnelly, the chief of DC firefighters.
According to Snead, she was only carrying out her duties and felt honored.
Snead stated, “To get the kids out, it took some very special people and some special skills.”
