Dearborn family in New Orleans for Sugar Bowl had just missed Bourbon Street attack
A day after a guy killed at least 15 people by driving his truck down a popular street in New Orleans, a Michigan family is just glad they’re safe. To watch their kid play football, the Tafelski family is in town.
(FOX 2):The Tafelski family had anticipated spending the first day of the new year in New Orleans, watching their son play in a College Football Playoff game.
Rather, they are rejoicing in the blessings that the so-called Big Easy had overlooked.
Tom Tafelski, a native of Dearborn, stated, “Bourbon Street is still an active crime scene, it’s still taped off.”
A guy is accused of driving his truck down Bourbon Street, killing at least 15 people and wounding many more. Tafelski had just left the street with his three sons when the commotion broke out.
The U.S. has seen its worst attack in almost a year, and the new year is off to a bleak start.
Tafelski was able to identify the scene of the tragedy from his balcony while standing inside his hotel room. He had come to Louisiana with his family to watch their son, Jake, play in the Sugar Bowl.
The final game of the day was supposed to be against Georgia, a member of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
Families like Tafelski, who had anticipated seeing the action the day before, were frantically making plans for the game.
“I’m attempting to persuade my travel agent to assist with aircraft rerouting by calling her. Since my son is actively participating in the game, I feel like I have a lot more at stake. No matter what, we’re staying,” Tafelski declared.

Although the family had expressed concern about some cross-traffic on Bourbon Street, there seemed to be enough police officers in the neighborhood to make things seem safe.
Tafelski believes it’s critical to prevent criminals from stealing their way of life as detectives try to figure out how the suspect, who was allegedly influenced by the Islamic State group, planned and carried out the act of terrorism.
“Unfortunately, we have to be aware of our surroundings, but we have to continue to live our lives,” he stated. “We can’t let these people stop us from living here in the United States.”
Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar, 42, has been recognized by law authorities as the driver who killed at least 15 people and injured dozens more in New Orleans.
