(FOX 2) Dearborn, MichiganIn Dearborn, a family tragedy occurred in which a mother died and her son was taken into custody. This case involves both domestic violence and mental illness.

A 70-year-old woman was fatally stabbed at her Reuter Street house on Sunday night, and the suspect was her own 36-year-old son, who had a violent and mentally ill past.

“They wanted to sell the house because she wanted to be closer to family,” stated Ali Khalifa. “I think it was due to her son’s mental issues.”

In nearby Dearborn Heights, Khalifa recently bought his house from the victim, Jamila Alwan, who had resided there with her kid. Khalifa was informed by relatives that there had been issues.

“That he had mental issues and stuff like that and there was like a, sometimes, conflict with his mother, that’s all we know,” added Khalifa.

Police in Dearborn Heights told FOX 2 that during their time there, they had three encounters with the son, one of which involved him trying to hit a neighbor in the backyard. The neighbor restrained him and phoned the police, who then transported him to the hospital for a mental health assessment.

When the son reportedly stabbed his mother in the neck on a Sunday night at their new Dearborn home, they were living with other family members who were not present.

According to the police, cops responded to the 911 call within three minutes. The person could not be saved despite their attempts at CPR.

“We offer our sincere condolences to the victim’s friends and family,” the police chief of Dearborn said in a statement. Such senseless actions have the power to completely upend a community. To ensure that the victim receives justice, we will carefully pursue this investigation.”

An unfortunate conclusion for a family coping with mental illness and domestic abuse.

“It’s sad for me to hear, but they’re very nice people – she was a very nice lady from my impression,” Khalifa replied.

According to Dearborn police, the son is being held and is scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday or Wednesday. Contact the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by texting or calling 988 if you or someone you know is experiencing mental health issues.
