DETROIT (FOX 2):This is an unprecedented step for ICE, which is enlisting the assistance of the FBI, DEA, and ATF in response to the statewide immigration sweep that targets criminals or unauthorized immigrants.
What they’re saying:
Paul Vanderplow is a newly retired special agent in command of the Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) Detroit Field Division.
He spoke to FOX 2 on the impending rise in Detroit and the surrounding areas.
“When they do start here, I expect to see federal agencies through the neighborhoods, and I fully expect them to treat the individuals with respect, dignity, and get through the process the way they have to,” he stated.
It will unfold similarly to what the country seen in Colorado, Boston, and the area around Houston.
Most of the people that were detained were either wanted for other crimes or were members of a gang.
“They re not going to settle for some case where it s just documentation; they re going after killers,” Vanderplow stated. “When you don t want to go, and you have that much incentive to not go, then the fight or flight equation comes more to fight.”
Although ICE will train the borrowed federal agents, ICE agents will have the last say on immigration status and other matters.
Paul Vanderplow of the Detroit Field Division of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives was interviewed by FOX 2.
