Detroit man charged in 3 murders, 5 shootings in 2022, pleads guilty

The 19-year-old Dontae Ramon Smith is accused of killing two ladies and a man on Sunday during a shooting spree.

FOX 2.The suspected Detroit man has pleaded guilty.

Dontae Smith entered a guilty plea for the August 2022 shooting spree he carried out at the age of 19. The shootings happened early on August 28 in the Wyoming area, close to Seven Mile. Despite being shot, one guy and his dog managed to survive.

Defendant Smith entered a guilty but mentally ill plea on Wednesday to five charges of felonies involving firearms, three counts of second-degree murder, one act of assault with intent to murder, and one crime of murdering or torturing animals.

Smith has a sentence agreement with the Michigan Department of Corrections that ranges from 28 to 50 years. The date of his sentence is February 28.

  • Chayne Lewis Lee, 28, of Detroit


  • Location:19880 block of Wyoming at 4:45 a.m.

“Defendant Smith is accused of shooting Mr. Lee several times, and after he collapsed to the ground, Smith allegedly kept shooting Mr. Smith. Detroit police officers found his lifeless body in a church doorway. According to the prosecutor’s office, the defendant allegedly left the scene by foot.



  • Jane Doe


  • Location: Wyoming and Margareta at 5:23 a.m.

Officers from Detroit were called to a scene where a resident reported hearing several gunshots and seeing a slim, dark-clad man strolling east on Margareta Street. Multiple gunshot wounds were seen on the body of a woman.



  • Lari Brisco, 43, of Detroit


  • Location: 19790 block of Livernois at 6:53 a.m.

When a female victim, subsequently identified as Lari Brisco, was shot, Detroit police officers arrived on the scene. At the site, medical personnel declared her dead. Defendant Smith is accused of shooting her several times before fleeing the scene.



  • John Palik, 76, of Detroit


  • Location: Home on Pennington at 7:08 a.m.

After hearing gunfire, Detroit police arrived at a residence on Pennington. Defendant Smith is accused of shooting Mr. Palik in the leg and his dog in the foot. After being brought to a nearby hospital, Mr. Palik was treated there. The attack did not harm him or his dog.

The shooting spree that morning was described by Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy as a reign of actual terror for the people of northwest Detroit.
