DETROIT (FOX 2):The annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day event at Detroit’s St. Matthew’s-St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church drew hundreds of people.

At the 22nd Annual Detroit MLK Day Rally & March, the dedication to MLK’s Dream was evident.

As the community honored the civil rights icon on Monday, organizers said the struggle for equality is still ongoing and should be everyone’s concern.

The Detroit MLK Day Committee’s Abayomi Azikiwe stated, “We’re here today to reemphasize our struggle for freedom, for equality, for self-determination, it lives on.”

Due to the frigid weather, which forced all activities indoors, the March was halted.

Six Decades of Mass Struggles Against Racism, Poverty, and War was the topic of the 2025 event.

The movement’s organizers speak for everyone involved, and the objective is obvious.

“The message is to freedom fighters, that this is a time to reevaluate who we are, what we are about, and what we need to do,” Cecily McClellan, who is with We The People of Detroit, stated.

Despite certain advancements, organizers assert that more work has to be done to realize Dr. King’s Dream. A number of Michigan politicians attended the event, including Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and US Representative Rashida Tlaib.

In the meanwhile, the event organizers wish to emphasize that everyone must be committed to the battle for justice and equality for everyone.

Communities are commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and legacy. There are celebrations of the civil rights hero across the nation.
