Detroit nonprofit shelter for women and children fleeing domestic violence needs help
The majority of the women and children who visit her present shelter are escaping eviction or domestic abuse and are living in their automobiles.
DETROIT (FOX 2):The new All Things Women emergency shelter and transitional housing, a church building being restored especially for homeless women and children, was toured by Mena Davis for FOX 2.
“We’ll have some family suites – we’re also going to offer – like this room, will be our community room,” founder Davis of the nonprofit organization stated. “Instead of telling women ‘Unfortunately we don’t have any space’ – this building could potentially put 60 more beds into the community.”
There is an urgent demand for space because shelters are filled and housing is limited. The majority of the women and children who visit her present shelter are escaping eviction or domestic abuse and are living in their automobiles.
“I get emotional when I think about toddlers sleeping in car seats,” she stated.
For Mena Davis, it’s deeply intimate.
“I remember what it was like to leave a situation as a child – and leave everything – every toy – every blanket – everything,” she continued. “And here we just try to provide all of those things.”
In order to give women a second opportunity, she has roughly a month to prepare the new shelter in Detroit’s Old Redford district, which will open in January. Her existing shelter in Boston Edison has 22 beds.
“A lot of times they come into the shelter and they’re so beaten and down and sad that they forget to look out the window,” she continued. “They forget that life is still going on.”
The church estimates that it will cost $120,000 to renovate this area. Although the organization lacks that kind of funding, they do hope that anyone who would be interested in volunteering and painting will support them.
Davis is requesting assistance from a church or community organization that could be interested in sponsoring a room or from a business that might wish to make a donation. They want to hear from you if that’s the case.”I prayed for something larger and this is where God brought me so I am just excited,” she stated. “And I’m just hoping that the community is excited to have a space and a place that can just love women back to life.”
They must first bring this structure back to life. In addition, there will be a community food pantry and clothing closet, as well as dedicated housing for female veterans.
