Detroit police arrest 140 in two days during winter warrant sweep

In a 48-hour period, 140 people—many of whom had gang affiliations—were detained. Eighty of them had active felony warrants for offenses ranging from gun charges to robbery.

DETROIT (FOX 2):During a two-day winter warrant sweep in Detroit this week, two hundred cops swarmed the streets from dawn till dusk.

“It was a purposeful effort throughout the holidays. According to Detroit Police Commander Anthony O. Rourke, “we do see a spike in crime of different categories.” “This warrant sweep was very specific to gangs and gang members and any warrants they had, whether it be felonies or misdemeanors.”

Why did Detroit police perform the warrant sweep?

The chief of the Detroit police Major Crimes Unit, Commander O. Rourke, claims they cleaned up, and the statistics support his claim. In a 48-hour period, 140 people—many of whom had gang affiliations—were detained. Eighty of them had active felony warrants for offenses ranging from gun charges to robbery.

Some of these arrests revealed a wealth of further offenses, but they also had a most wanted list.

“You think it s just a narcotics house, and then you go in there and then you find stolen guns and then obviously that can lead you in a different direction that s connected to other crimes,” O Rourke said.

Getting guns out of the wrong hands was a major component of this, in addition to getting alleged violent offenders off the streets and into the system.

What was recovered by police during the sweep?

Over thirty firearms were taken and are currently in evidence.

“See where they originated from, whose hands were they supposed to be in, whose were they not supposed to be in, are they connected to other crimes,” O Rourke said.

Almost always, guns and drugs go hand in hand, and they discovered that during this sweep as well.

“Significant amounts of marijuana, heroin, cocaine, fentanyl, a large amount of pills,” O Rourke stated. “It s great when we can get that particular drug off the streets because of the lethality of it.”

Of all of them, fentanyl is undoubtedly the most sought-after to get. Months of preparation went into this concerted effort with federal and state agencies. According to Commander O. Rourke, they will be visiting a neighborhood close to you.

“Obviously, we will not let the bad guys know our schedule when we do these, but it will be happening on a regular basis,” O Rourke stated.
