(FOX 2):After yet another poor hockey season start, the Detroit Red Wings sacked its head coach and associate new coach.

Steve Yzerman, the general manager, declared that Bob Boughner and Derek Lalonde had been dismissed of their positions with immediate effect.

Yzerman announced that Todd McLellan had been appointed as the team’s new head coach in their stead. Trent Yawney was also brought on as the new assistant coach.

The Wings used Instagram to make the announcement.

McLellan will be the 29th head coach of the franchise. Prior to that, he was fired in February 2024 after five years as the Los Angeles Kings’ coach. He had previously played for the Edmonton Oilers and the San Jose Sharks.

After serving as an assistant coach under former head coach Mike Babcock during the team’s Stanley Cup victory in 2008, his employment represents a sort of comeback to the franchise.

The Wings are off to a start, sitting close to the bottom of the Atlantic Division with a 13-17-4 record.
