Detroit woman with dementia displaced from her home after house fire

DETROIT (FOX 2):A fire tore up the home of an elderly woman with dementia in Detroit last week, forcing her to relocate just weeks before Christmas.
A family attempting to rebuild their lives after a fire destroys their possessions and uproots them along with their dementia-stricken grandmother, Ruth Brown
“We lived in the home for 54 years,” Ruth Brown’s daughter Lashawn Brown Cooper recalled. “We wanted to stay at the house because my mom didn’t want to move after my dad passed away in 2018.” Thus, my youngest brother, my spouse, and I reside in the house.
That is, until just after 3 p.m. on Monday, firefighters arrived at a house in Monica that was on fire. The only two people in the house were the matriarch and her son, who escaped unharmed, but the family home sustained serious damage. Many things are non-replaceable.
“When I walked through that front door, it s unbelievable,” Cooper stated. “All these pictures are just gone.”
The family acknowledges that they did not have home insurance as the cost of the plan became unmanageable.
“Our congress people, we need to get on top of that because the insurance on the house was $747 a month, and I just couldn t afford that.” Cooper uttered those words.
The family acknowledges that while they are thankful that no one was killed in the fire, they now have to rebuild while the cause of the incident is still being investigated. and it is their wish that anyone who can assist will.
Getting this grandmother back into her house while she fights dementia is essential to her health and a Christmas wish for the whole family, even if the Browns are currently residing with her extended family.
