Discount chain with 900 stores closing location in weeks after 28 years – shoppers won’t be missing out for long
Before the year ends, a well-known bargain store with 900 locations is scheduled to close a long-standing outlet.
After 28 years of operation, Save A Lot will close, but another retailer will soon take its place.
The owners of the Save A Lot grocery store in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, which is 30 miles from Iowa City, declared on Monday, November 25, that it would close before the end of the year.
A Save A Lot employee told The U.S. Sun that they anticipate the store closing around Christmas, though the precise date has not been disclosed.
In 1997, Jim and Robin McVeigh created the inexpensive grocery store, which is located at 1625 J Street Southwest.
A Me Too food store was housed in the building where the Save A Lot now stands.

“My wife and I have made the heartfelt decision to retire and close our locally owned and operated grocery store after nearly 28 years of serving our community,” Mr. McVeigh said in a statement.
We were simply two newlyweds wanting to develop a successful business when we first opened our doors all those years ago. It has been a pleasure to see our two children grow up with so many of you, as we nurtured them together among the aisles.
Save A Lot
The headquarters of the American cheap grocery store business Save A Lot are located in St. Ann, Missouri.
Bill Moran established it in 1977 in Cahokia Heights, Illinois, as a shopping substitute for bigger supermarkets.
In 32 US states, there are approximately 900 independently operated Save A Lots.
The company’s annual sales come to roughly $4 billion.
We are thankful for the support you have given us over the years, as you have not only been our clients but also friends who have shared in our lives and communities.
Early in the upcoming year, the Save A Lot will be replaced by a new shop.
According to a release, the McVeighs are the space’s landowners and a new tenant has signed a lease to operate in 2025.
It stated that a well-known national store that also sells groceries will soon open in our region, but it did not identify the new retailer.
“We wanted to make sure that another company opened to provide jobs and keep the community going,” the McVeighs said.
SAVE A LOT STRUGGLES
Save A Lot has experienced a difficult phase of shop closures, much like many other grocery stores and businesses in the United States.
Over 40 of the discount chain’s locations were shut down last year; this pattern has persisted until 2024.
Save A Lot closed its locations in Indiana, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Missouri in the first two months of this year.
In 2024, the chain also shut down its stores in Texas, West Virginia, New York, and Wisconsin.
Save A Lot has enormous ambitions for expansion despite the wave of closures.
The chain announced its intention to grow to about 3,000 stores in the next years at the National Retail Federation’s Big Show in January.
It has also been difficult for other retailers to stay open.
