DETROIT (FOX 2):Amid an increase in flu infections, all Medical Center facilities are implementing new visitation policies.
The health system states that each patient may have two visitors at a time; nevertheless, there are limitations on the visitors’ ages.
Even if they are a patient’s relative, visitors under the age of twelve are not permitted on the observation units or impatient floors.
Additionally, those over 13 who are ill or showing signs of the flu are asked to stay at home.
Dr. Teena Chopra, a professor of infectious diseases at Wayne State University and the Corporate Medical Director of Infection Prevention and Hospital Epidemiology and Antibiotic Stewardship for Detroit Medical Center, stated that the number of flu infections has been rising nationwide. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reports that influenza activity in Michigan is now rising quickly. We implemented these adjustments for our patients’ safety and care at this time of elevated influenza activity in the community.
Michigan’s data as of December 28, 2024, indicated a “high respiratory activity level.” Additionally, 11 pediatric influenza-related deaths had occurred during the 2024–2025 flu season as of the same date. This flu season, Michigan has reported no pediatric flu-related fatalities.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and a DMC press release provided the information used in this story.
