Dollar General makes major service change as big bosses admit it’s trying to keep up with Walmart
Dollar General is experimenting with a significant service adjustment in an effort to more effectively compete with retail behemoths like Walmart.
Customers will benefit from the delivery scheme that the bargain store is testing.
With more than 20,000 locations around the country, Dollar General is one of the leading bargain merchants in the US.
The chain is experimenting with same-day delivery to strengthen its position as a competitor in the retail market.
During this week’s earnings call, CEO Todd Vasos revealed that Dollar General Soft started the delivery program in September.
According to him, the business currently provides same-day delivery at about 75 Dollar General stores nationwide.

The CEO did not identify the third-party company that provides the delivery service.
Vasos stated, “We’ve always stated here that we’ll deliver our way when the time comes.” We think the time has come.
According to the executive, Dollar General intends to eventually expand the product line to thousands of locations.
SHIFTING STRATEGIES
Dollar General has acknowledged the pressures from its competitors by implementing DGDelivery, a same-day delivery service, for customers.
Low costs and convenience are provided by other large merchants like Amazon and Walmart.
For instance, Walmart’s curbside and in-store pickup services, along with free same-day delivery for Walmart+ members, have helped the company’s online business grow steadily.
The CEO of Dollar General has made public statements in recent months about the company’s declining market share to Walmart.
At a retail conference in September, Vasos revealed that the men in Bentonville, Arkansas, where Walmart has its headquarters, had a little bigger share of Dollar General’s middle-class clientele.
According to the CEO, DGDelivery was introduced after the business gained insight from its DoorDash deliveries, which are offered at around 16,000 of its locations.
According to Dollar General’s website, clients can use the new same-day delivery service at a few locations.
Customers may get in-store rates and delivery in as little as an hour when they place their orders using the chain’s app.
Additionally, the program offers cash-back benefits and takes digital coupons.
The launch of the new service follows a difficult year for Dollar General.
Macroeconomic issues as well as the company’s own strategy have affected it during 2024.
Consumers have been compelled by inflation to cut back on their discretionary spending, particularly the low-income consumers that up the majority of the chain’s clientele.
Additionally, Dollar General has been slammed with fines totaling millions of dollars for violations of worker safety.

All 19,000 locations will close for a full day, according to the bargain chain, and Walmart will not assist.
A irate customer who had been charged erroneously was also told to “fix your registers” by Dollar General.
