Drunk driver that allegedly killed 7-year-old offered shorter sentence in 7-Mile crash
DETROIT (FOX 2):In November, a drunk motorist on Detroit’s east side crossed a red light, colliding with another vehicle, killing 7-year-old Jerome Coleman Junior and seriously injuring his 5-year-old sister.
After finding out what the driver’s sentence may be, their father, Jerome Coleman Sr., lost it in a now-viral video. Coleman attacked a purported “deal” for his son’s alleged killer as well as the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
“Yesterday was the last straw for me. “I felt like I exploded because I was so overwhelmed by everything,” he added.
Overview:
On November 9, thirty-year-old Ahmed Jastta is accused of killing Jerome Jr. by driving a white automobile down a red light while intoxicated and fleeing the scene at 7 Mile and Mound.
There was cake and candles on Jerome’s birthday, but there was no Jerome to celebrate—a heartbreaking scene. His father recalls the last time they spoke, when Jr. expressed his desire to pursue a career in art.
“He informed me that he wasn’t very good at sketching, so I advised him to keep drawing and that he would grow a little better. He promised to have a painting for me when he got home. However, that clearly never took place,” Coleman added.
The backstory
Police said the driver of the vehicle that caused the collision was Ahmad Jatta, a 30-year-old Roseville resident.
According to the allegations, Jatta fled the scene of the collision and went to his home, where his mother persuaded him to return and surrender. According to the police, the suspect’s blood alcohol content was 0.13 even two hours after the collision.
Wayne Co. Assistant Prosecutor Lisa Coyle stated, “The defendant had been drinking vodka and driving very fast, knowing that the light was red for him.”
Following all of this, the driver asked for what is known as a “Cobbs Agreement,” which is a plea bargain between the judge and the defendant.
Jatta will now receive a sentence of six years and three months in prison, with the possibility of a 15-year jail term from the 36th District Court judge.
It’s more like I’ll give the criminal more assistance than you will. Coleman remarked, “The offenders receive more assistance than the victims.
He would have faced life in jail if the murder charge had been upheld.
According to Jerome, he and Prosecutor Kym Worthy and her team were scheduled to meet after his video went viral.
That is scheduled on January 29.
