Earthquake warning for Santorini closes schools as holiday island is rocked by series of small quakes

Schools on the vacation island of Santorini have been closed due to an earthquake threat.

Authorities have taken precautions after a series of minor earthquakes shook the Greek paradise.

On Monday, schools were closed, and residents were cautioned to stay away from two tiny ports and to avoid congregating indoors.

On Friday and Saturday, a string of underwater tremors with a magnitude of up to 4.3 were recorded in the region between Amorgos and the volcanic island of Santorini.

Earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 2.8 to 4.5 struck the region on Sunday morning, but no damage was caused.

The region’s most recent eruption took place in 1950.

The island’s current shape was created by one of the biggest volcanic eruptions in recorded history, which occurred in 1600 BC.
