Ezekiel Elliott signs with Super Bowl contender just days after being cut by Dallas Cowboys following dreadful season
After being cut by the Dallas Cowboys, NFL veteran running back Ezekiel Elliott signed with a postseason team.
On New Year’s Eve, Elliott, 29, was waived prior to the Cowboys’ game against the Washington Commanders in the season finale.
Ian Rapoport of NFLNetwork revealed a week after Elliott’s release that the Los Angeles Chargers had signed him before to their possible run for the Super Bowl.
The Chargers have signed Elliott to their practice squad, according to the NFL insider, who wrote on X that they “hope he gets up to speed quickly.”
Elliott had asked the Cowboys to let him go so he could join with a team that was in the running for the Super Bowl.
“Out of respect and appreciation for Zeke and wanting to give him an opportunity to pursue any potential playoff participation possible,” said Jerry Jones, the general manager and owner of the Cowboys, when he announced last week that Elliott had been waived.

Elliott will join a Chargers squad that secured the No. 5 seed in the AFC with an 11-6 record at the end of the season.
On Saturday, they will play the Houston Texans in the Wild Card round.
The squad finished with a 7-10 record at Elliott’s previous stop in Dallas, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2020.
With 74 rush attempts for 226 yards and three scores, he had a terrible time in Dallas.
Elliott was active for every game prior to Week 18, with the exception of Week 9, when he was deactivated for the game against the Atlanta Falcons on November 3 due to alleged meeting absences.
Only once in his final eight game appearances did he surpass 14 snaps.
The 29-year-old, who had a one-year contract with the New England Patriots, recorded 642 rushing yards on 184 rushes and three touchdowns during the previous season.
Elliott’s play from his first tenure in Dallas is very different from his most recent production.
He was selected in the first round of the 2016 Cowboys draft, made three Pro Bowls, and won two rushing titles.
During his tenure with Dallas, Elliott recorded 30 games with 100 yards and set a rookie team rookie record with 1,631 yards.
For the fifth time in his career, the nine-year NFL veteran will be a member of a postseason club.
Being added to the Chargers’ active roster is what Elliott will be hoping for.

Elliott’s addition can be covered in the event that tailback Gus Edwards, who hurt his ankle in Week 16 and made it worse during practice, is unable to participate in Saturday’s playoff game.
The Chargers’ backfield is led by J.K. Dobbins, who is followed by Hassan Haskins and Kimani Vidal.
