DETROIT (FOX 2):After a devastating fire in Detroit almost destroyed their house and claimed a vital family member, the family is currently rebuilding.

A fire tore through Starkiesha Leonard’s house on Saturday, leaving it entirely boarded up. According to Starkiesha, her daughter Serenity felt trouble at around five in the morning.

She alerted everyone to the fire in the living room.

However, it was Luke, the family dog, who made Serenity understand something was amiss before she informed her mother about the fire.

“She seen him crying and looking toward the fire and moving back,” she continued.

Together with the family, Starkiesha attempted to extinguish the fire. Deonte, her 19-year-old son, had to leap out the balcony and onto the roof in order to escape.

Although Mom and her two children are thankful to be alive, they must start anew in the new year.

That morning, Starkiesha referred to Luke and her kid as the dog heroes.

The family hopes that others will take note of their tragedy as they attempt to move on.

Unfortunately, the loss of Luke has left the family in a state of overwhelming grief.

Her words, “I be trying not to get emotional,” “My dog passed away. So, that is very devastating. I failed to rescue him.

Although the source of the fire is being investigated, Starkiesha thinks a candle might have been the cause. She hopes that fire safety is taken seriously by every family.
