Fatal Amtrak Train Accident Claims Lives Of 6-Year-Old Boy And Two Others In Upstate NY

DEBARYLIFE – In upstate New York, an Amtrak train from the Big Apple collided with a pickup truck, killing three people, including a six-year-old boy.

In North Tonawanda, a town in Niagara County close to Buffalo, the northbound train collided with the Dodge pickup just before 8 p.m., according to the police.

According to a news release from the upstate police department, “the North Tonawanda police and fire departments responded and made every effort to help save the three individuals inside the vehicle.”

The press announcement stated, “All three occupants were pronounced dead at the scene despite their best efforts.” “A 69-year-old man, a 66-year-old woman, and a 6-year-old boy were the three occupants.”

After the incident, none of the 21 passengers on board the train reported injuries, according to Amtrak spokesperson Olivia Irvin.

When it collided with the car, the train was traveling to Niagara Falls after leaving the Big Apple.

The pickup truck was reduced to a crumpled metal in the aftermath of the incident, and rescue workers had to pry into the car to extract the three bodies, according to photos that the North Tonawanda firefighter’s union shared on Facebook.

At the scene, all three were declared deceased. Names have not been made public by police.

According to the tweet from Firefighter’s Local 1333, first responders at the scene received a debriefing and were given access to counseling and mental health facilities.

Witnesses who contacted the local media claimed that the vehicle became inoperable after becoming stuck between the railroad crossing’s gates.

It was the second time this year that a car in North Tonawanda was hit by a train, according to WGTZ-TV News.

A 2021 Hyundai Elantra was struck on January 16 after fully stopping on the rails near Witmer Road, according to the publication.

The driver, 29, was taken to a nearby hospital and later passed away.

Letters requesting a response were filed with the mayor and police department in North Tonawanda on Sunday.
