Father of off-duty DPD officer killed in hit-and-run crash: ‘He always put people first’

DETROIT (FOX 2):An off-duty DP officer was slain on Monday afternoon.
Just after midnight on Sunday, Cameron Richardson was on his way home from work at the Ninth Precinct.
At the crossroads of Griener and Hoover, he was heading north when what witnesses described as a white van tried to turn left in front of his car and collided with the Jeep.
“You know all the time we thought we d get the call that something happened at work, and here he was just driving home,” John Harris, his father, said.
Richardson joined the Army after high school and served for just over a year as a police officer.
“He decided to go into the military when he was 19 – we were kind of scared for him at that time but it was something he wanted to do, he wanted to serve his county,” said Harris.

He returned home to Detroit after ten years of serving his country and made the decision to serve his community.
According to his father, “he wanted to be on the east side where he grew up at.”
“He loved being a police officer, I heard some stories of him interacting with the community,” Harris added. “Getting the community involved.”
Richardson was described as an exceptional officer by Todd Bettison, the interim police chief.
“The way he wears the uniform whether it was serving his county, or this fine city here,” remarked Bettison. “I would say a humble servant who wanted to be a police officer.”
“He always placed others before himself and gave his all—something he learned from his mother and myself as a child. And I’m really pleased with him.”
Detroit Police Interim Chief Todd Bettison stated, “The City of Detroit lost one of Detroit’s finest earlier this morning.”
