The crush occurred during a match between N’z r kor and Lab, which drew thousands of spectators.

“The government regrets the incidents that marred the football match between the Lab and Nz r kor teams this afternoon in Nz r kor,” Prime Minister Bah Oury stated in a statement.

The government is keeping an eye on how things are unfolding and has reiterated its appeal for composure so that medical personnel may continue to treat injured patients.

The game was played as part of a tournament honoring Mamadi Doumbouya, the leader of Guinea’s military junta, who took over in a coup in 2021 and proclaimed himself president.

In September 2021, Doumbouya overthrew President Alpha Conde and took control by force.

Though he has subsequently stated that he will not, he made it plain in 2024 that he would transfer power back to a civilian government.
