Fenton woman killed, five others hospitalized in deadly I-96 crash on New Year’s Day
I-96 close to the scene of a triple-fatal collision that left one person dead and five others injured
FOX 2: Lyon Township, MichiganOne woman was killed and five others were critically injured in a triple-car incident on I-96 early on New Year’s Day.
When a car rear-ended another stopped on I-96 and was slammed head-on by a third car, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office is not ruling out alcohol as a contributing role in the fatal incident.
A 2016 Ford Explorer carrying a 57-year-old Fenton lady in the backseat collided with a stopped Chevrolet Trax on westbound I-96 in Lyon Township.
Just to the east of the South Hill Road flyover was the location.
The Trax had been stopped with its hazard lights on in the interstate’s second lane. The driver, a 30-year-old guy from Ypsilanti, halted the vehicle for an unknown reason.
The Trax whirled about and ended up facing east in the westbound lane of the highway after the Explorer collided with it.
The Fenton woman was subsequently killed when the Explorer was slammed head-on by a 2018 Jeep Compass.
The 75-year-old driver of the Jeep is in critical condition at the hospital, while the Explorer’s driver and front-seat passenger are both in serious condition.
So is the 82-year-old spouse of the murdered Fenton woman. The Fenton woman may or may not have been wearing a seat belt.
The Trax’s driver, meanwhile, was sent to the hospital in stable condition. They had a blood draw, and the results are still pending.
The sheriff’s crash reconstruction unit is conducting the inquiry.
When police arrived at a residence Wednesday night in Northfield Township, they discovered two persons dead and a third wounded from a gunshot wound. This was the startling New Year’s Day carnage.
