Five Arrested in Medicaid Fraud Scheme Tied to Death of 7-Year-Old Boy
In Fort Lauderdale, five individuals, including family members and healthcare providers, face charges in the death of 7-year-old Deonte Atwell, a boy with severe medical conditions who died on Christmas Day. Authorities allege Atwell was a victim of prolonged neglect and malnutrition, part of a broader scheme to defraud Medicaid of over $10,000.
Atwell was diagnosed at birth with thoracic spina bifida and hydrocephalus, requiring around-the-clock care. Despite these critical needs, evidence shows that 264 unopened bottles of formula were found in the home, suggesting the boy was deliberately deprived of life-sustaining nutrition. His autopsy revealed “bones protruding through gaping holes in his skin,” and he had likely been dead for some time before a 911 call reported “respiratory distress” on Christmas night.
Deonte’s mother, Michelle Doe, 37, is accused of first-degree murder, aggravated manslaughter, child abuse, and child neglect. She faces potential life imprisonment. Doe had launched a GoFundMe in January, claiming her son died from his birth defects, a narrative now contradicted by the investigation. Her 21-year-old son, Tyreck Irvin, faces similar charges. Their grandfather, James Graham, 70, is charged with aggravated manslaughter and child neglect but was granted a $22,000 bond.
Two home healthcare workers, nurse Cassandre Lassegue, 33, and home health provider Mirlande Moltimer Ameda, 47, also face charges of third-degree murder, aggravated manslaughter, and Medicaid fraud. Lassegue is additionally charged with first-degree murder, as she is accused of falsifying records and neglecting the child for an extended period. Detectives believe her lack of care contributed significantly to Atwell’s deteriorating condition.
The investigation revealed a troubling scheme to defraud Medicaid, with officials estimating losses between $10,000 and $50,000.
