Florida Man Gets Prison Time for Multi-State Crypto Robberies, Toe-Cutting Threats
Remy St. Felix, a Florida resident, was convicted on Tuesday in a North Carolina federal court for orchestrating a series of violent robberies targeting cryptocurrency holders across five states. Found guilty on nine counts, including conspiracy, abduction, and Hobbs Act robbery, St. Felix faces a potential life sentence, with a minimum of seven years, set to be determined in September.
Authorities linked St. Felix to crimes in Florida, Texas, New York, and North Carolina from September 2022 to July 2023. The gang exploited the anonymity of digital currencies, using encrypted communication to conceal their activities. Despite these efforts, law enforcement brought the group to justice, with all thirteen co-conspirators pleading guilty.
In a particularly chilling incident in April 2023, St. Felix and an accomplice posed as construction workers to infiltrate a victim’s home. They held the victim and his wife at gunpoint, demanding over $150,000 in bitcoin while threatening to harm them severely, including cutting off the husband’s toes.
U.S. Attorney Sandra J. Hairston emphasized the severe trauma inflicted on the victims, calling the gang’s actions horrific. St. Felix was apprehended in July 2023, preventing another planned home invasion in New York.
