Guilty Plea, Harsh Sentence: What’s Next for Gregory Hopkins?
MURPHYSBORO, Ill. – On Thursday, May 2, a man from Cape Girardeau who had previously entered a guilty plea to the first-degree murder charge against his wife was sentenced.
According to the State’s Attorney for Jackson County, Joseph A. Cervantez, Gregory Hopkins, who is thirty years old, was given a sentence of forty-two years in jail during a sentencing hearing that was called into question.
Cervantez stated in a statement that was made public that Hopkins would serve the entirety of his sentence of imprisonment.
On September 27, Hopkins entered a guilty plea to the charge of murdering his wife, Gloria Hopkins, who was 26 years old and located in Carbondale.
The Carbondale Police Department reported that on January 4, 2022, police were dispatched to the 1100 block of East College Street, where they discovered the body of Gloria Hopkins. According to the findings of the investigation, she was the victim of an episode of domestic abuse that occurred with her husband, Gregory Hopkins.
After making his escape from Carbondale, Hopkins made his way to the Los Angeles, California region.
Gregory Hopkins was located by the Los Angeles Police Department, and he was promptly transported back to Jackson County to await his trial.
