Gynaecologist ‘raped 87 patients, aged 14 to 67, & secretly filmed examinations’ for 20 years in case that rocked Norway
In a sex abuse scandal that has shook Norway, a former gynecologist is accused of raping 87 women at his surgery and recording the assaults for 20 years.
Grim allegations of sexual abuse, including against two youngsters who were 14 and 15 years old at the time of the alleged assaults, have put Arne Bye, 55, on trial.
When Bye allegedly raped the oldest woman, she was 67 years old.
He faces up to 21 years in prison after entering a guilty plea to three counts of rape and thirty-five cases of abuse of position.
During their investigation, police confiscated more than 6,000 hours of video, including his gynecological exams.
Officials characterized them as “sensitive and detailed” because they were reportedly performed on patients without their knowledge.

Without any medical justification, Bye is accused of inserting a cylindrical, “deodorant-like,” and “bottle-like” device into the women.
Speaking before the Trndelag court, one woman claimed, “I thought I was going to die.”
Before undergoing one of the intrusive tests, another anonymous woman claimed to have visited her doctor’s office due to a sore throat.
When she described how she found herself on a bench in her underwear, she added, “I thought that he is my doctor, so I did as he said.”
The alleged attacks “happened quickly and unexpectedly” during the examinations, according to Bye’s indictment.
They were set in Frosta, a little village on the Norwegian coast with a population of just 2,600.
Richard Haugen Lyng, the state attorney, stated: “We have video recordings of the assault itself.” The court has viewed explicit footage that Bye took.
“In that sense, we have a rather special evidentiary situation in the case, in that large parts of the indictment are illustrated with video material, says the prosecutor.”
In court, the former physician stated that he never examined the recordings of his appointments because he was afraid of lawsuits.
One of the video, according to Norwegian network NRK, shows him setting up multiple cameras in the room before starting to examine one of the women named in the case.
Additionally, according to the outlet, he made a partial admission to the rape accusations on Wednesday in court.
Another physician in the gynecology unit of a nearby hospital voiced concerns about him as early as 2006.
During the examination, one of Bye’s patients, who was in for additional care, claimed that her doctor had massaged her genitalia.
After being made aware of the potential behavior by health officials, police began an investigation in August 2022.

Until charges were brought the next year, Bye was allowed to maintain his employment.
As the trial goes on, he has not been placed under remand in detention.
