Heartbreak for Appling County Baseball: GHSA 2A State Championship Loss
The season of Appling County Baseball has been centred around the concept of resilience, and the postseason has been particularly centred around this concept. As the Pirates were attempting to make it a fourth time in a row with their backs against the wall in the state championship game, they had won three successive series in three games.
On Tuesday, North Cobb Christian defeated Appling County by a score of 3-0 to capture the GHSA 2A state championship. This victory is the second consecutive title for the programme.
“Today, we just weren’t able to get it done, but I’m proud to be able to lead these guys and to be around these kids as much as I am, and these three seniors I’ve got here with me, they’re incredible, and Appling County is going to miss them,” said Zack Griffis, the head coach of the Appling County football team.
It’s just baseball, but we just kicked around a few pitches and had a couple of pitches go against us. That’s just the way it is. Give a squad like that the chance to hurt you, and that is exactly what happened when you gave them the chance to do so. Griffis went on to say that the fact that they were able to capitalise on a few of our errors was the deciding factor in the game.
“If you would have asked any of us sitting here if we would have been sitting here at the beginning of the year, I’m sure our answer would all be no,” said Collin Ewaldsen, a senior with the Appling County School District. Despite the challenges we faced, we never stopped believing that we were the underdogs, and we never stopped playing until we prevailed.
The season for Appling County concludes with a record of 24-16, and they have won the region championship for the second year in a row.
