TRAGIC CHILD DROWNINGS

In December 2022, it was discovered that four children at Babbs Mill in Solihull, West Midlands, had drowned.

Along with their relative Thomas Stewart, age 11, and Jack Johnson, age 10, siblings Samuel Butler, age 6, and Finlay Butler, age 8, perished.

They fell through Afrozen Lake and died.

Before it broke, they were reportedly “playing” on the ice.

Three of the boys were rescued after 22 minutes in the water, according to testimony given during an initial inquest hearing conducted in Birmingham on Monday.

After thirty-one minutes, a fourth was retrieved from the lake.

“Devastating tragedy” is how Birmingham and Solihull Senior Coroner Louise Hunt characterized the situation.

“I think, in respect, it is fair to say they very sadly died from the effect of drowning.”

The parents of Samuel, Finlay, and Thomas penned in a heartbroken statement: “As a family, we are devastated at the loss of our beautiful boys in such tragic circumstances.”

“We would like to thank the emergency services for all they did in rescuing the boys and to the community for their support, it has been overwhelming.”
