FOX 2, Ann Arbor, Mich. After spotting a burning house in Ann Arbor and rushing to see if anyone needed assistance, a mail carrier is being hailed as a hero.
Cory Shaw-Hillman’s Wednesday morning as a mail carrier was anything from ordinary. He saw flames rising from one of the apartments at the Hillcrest Apartments on St. Charles Drive on his way to work.
“You could see flames as if in a like a bowl of flames on the porch there and I couldn t see anybody up there,” claimed the man. “I was finishing my coffee, and I noticed that there was a fire on the porch.”
“I hurried over to the building to see if anyone was in danger,” Cory told FOX 2.
“I began buzzing the buzzers, and when a young girl came down, I asked her what apartment she was in. Since I was in my uniform and the apartment was across the street, she allowed me entry. I called the apartment where the fire happened, but no one was there. I suppose he’s the father. I dialed 911 when he said, “Please call the police.”
He claims that because he showed them the way, the fire brigade arrived quickly to get to work.
“I pointed to where it was – which porch it was and you could see flames dripping off of that porch and on to the lower porch.”
Many were concerned that it would have swiftly spread to nearby places, but fire authorities said it was a small fire. Just being in the right spot at the right time makes Cory happy.
“Really, I couldn’t believe it was happening. He remarked, “I’m not the kind to end up in this kind of predicament.
Investigations are underway into the incident.
