FOX 2: St. Claire Shores, Mich.Although everyone ought to have a place to call home, the number of homeless individuals and families in the nation is sharply rising.
The Motor City Mitten Mission provides daily assistance to numerous families and people, including delivering a hot dinner to a homeless family staying in a motel.
“We don’t have a day off every day, seven days a week. “We’re out there,” Brooke Rosso of “We are going on over 2,000 days straight in a row of outreach.”
Rosso is back in the kitchen at the Mitten Mission in Saint Clair Shores, supervising the preparation of the meals.
“I wouldn’t serve anything out of this kitchen that I wouldn’t eat myself,” she stated. “We try and give a balanced meal they’re going to get a protein, they’re going to get a starch, they’re going to get a vegetable, a fruit.”
The creator of Motor City Mitten Mission is Gail Marlow. They have been providing food, clothing, and shelter to the homeless over the past seven years.
“We outfit each van to basically carry everything that you would need to survive in the elements,” she explained.
She claims that rather than getting better, the issue is just growing worse.
“Affordable housing, mental health, substance abuse,” she stated.
According to Marlow, the primary causes of the problem’s worsening include substance misuse, mental health issues, and cheap housing. The number of homeless people in the US increased by 18%, reaching around 800,000.
“We have several people and families that are sleeping in cars, that are sleeping in storage units, that are sleeping in abandoned buildings,” she stated.
According to Marlow, the issue won’t be resolved unless we give access to cheap housing and mental health care first priority. However, Motor City Mitten Mission will continue to provide assistance.
“Especially in our society today, we all gotta help each other out, and we need to realize that we’re all in this together, and homelessness does affect all of us,” she stated.
It’s simple to be kind, and when we work together, we can change the world, as their motto states. Visit motorcitymittenmission.org/ to find out more.
