HOMEOWNERS can save upwards of $8,000 towards an energy-efficient home heating and cooling system thanks to a new state-issued program.
Single-family households and multifamily properties in California could qualify for the savings through the new Home Appliance and Electrification Rebates (HEAR or HEEHRA).
The program, announced by Governor Gavin Newsom and the California Energy Commission on Thursday, aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve indoor air quality.
HEAR will provide $45 million for single-family homes and $35 million to multifamily projects to modify their residences with an efficient electrification system, according to the governor’s office.
Single-family homeowners with incomes between 80% and 150% of the area median income (AMI) will be eligible for up to a $4,000 rebate.
Meanwhile, those owners with incomes less than 80% AMI will be eligible for a $8,000 rebate.

HEAR defines a single-family property as one to four units.
For multifamily housing, rebates range from $700 to $8,000 per unit.
The maximum rebate a multifamily housing unit can receive is $14,000, depending on their income level.
HEAR defines a multifamily housing property as consisting of five or more residential units.
Los Angeles County’s median income should be $208,050 or less for a family of four.
However, the rebates must be used to reduce the cost of purchasing or installing a new, energy-efficient home heating and cooling heat pump.

Homeowners can inform themselves about their county’s AMI by visiting HEAR’s rebate verification portal.
“Thousands of dollars are now available for California homeowners to install heat pumps, making your home more energy-efficient and reducing your energy bill by hundreds of dollars each year,” Governor Newsom said.
“With these new rebates made possible by the Biden-Harris administration, Californians can save money and take real climate action.”
Applications for the program opened on November 12.
Applicants can submit their applications via HEAR’s verification portal.
The California Energy Commission will distribute the funds through Tech Clean California.
“We’re excited to announce that owners of single-family homes may apply for HEEHRA rebates on the purchase or installation of an energy-efficient heat pump HVAC,” CEC commissioner Andrew McAllister said.
“These units make homes more comfortable and can reduce electricity use by up to 75%, compared to electric resistance heating such as furnaces.

“They also work as air conditioners, which an increasing number of Californians now need due to the effects of climate change.
“HEEHRA helps put this dual-use clean technology within reach of more Californians.”
