I kept my uncle’s old sculptures for decades – I quickly started sobbing when Antiques Roadshow said they’re worth $30k
When a woman learned that the antique sculptures she had kept from her uncle were valued at thousands of dollars, she broke down in tears.
After bringing the unique objects to be assessed by a knowledgeable appraiser with Antiques Roadshow, she was informed of the startling news.
The owner received three sculptures from her grandmother and uncle, who just so happened to be Jerome Kirk.
In the episode of the highly regarded PBS series, the appraiser questioned, “He was quite successful, wasn’t he?”
According to Louis Stern Fine Artists, Kirk was a well-known artist and World War II veteran who focused in kinetic art, which is defined as any work of art that shows movement and is perceptible to the observer.

“He had been commissioned all over the world to put kinetic sculptures in front of buildings,” the woman said in reference to her uncle.
The woman brought two of Kirk’s sculptures to Antiques Roadshow; they were made of aluminum and were really little and silver.
All of them had various shapes that functioned as a kind of fulcrum, but the third was bigger, made of a stronger metal, and painted orange.
Kirk frequently claimed to have been influenced by Alexander Calder, who is widely regarded as the founder of kinetic art, and the appraiser observed that this influence was evident in the sculptures.

He estimated that the three pieces the woman brought were from the mid-century modern era, specifically the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.

Additionally, he pointed out that the larger orange kinetic sculpture in particular had a carving that was made in May 1980.
According to the appraiser, the other smaller silver sculptures would probably sell at auction at between $4,000 and $5,000 apiece since they are Kirk originals, even though they did not have dates engraved on them.

The value of the larger orange piece was significantly higher.
“The large one? “Probably between $15,000 and $20,000,” he informed the woman.

Today, the total value of the collection could reach $30,000.
It would not be the first time that someone on Antiques Roadshow was driven to tears after inadvertently holding onto a priceless work of art.
