ICE in Metro Detroit: Arrests ramp up one week into second Trump term

DETROIT (FOX 2):Just one week into his second term, President Donald Trump is already noticing policy changes both nationally and in Metro Detroit.

The data indicates a rise in the number of border control agents in the region. One of those arrests took place in front of a West Dearborn Kroger.

The majority of those interviewed by FOX 2 are aware of the rise of border patrol personnel, which has some residents worried and calling for legal advice.

On Monday afternoon, numerous videos of Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers were captured at various locations throughout Dearborn.

Raed Mourad, an immigration lawyer, says this is a reflection of what he is witnessing in the community.

“ICE has undoubtedly increased the number of their pickups. “I get calls all the time, mostly from Hispanic clients who are afraid and anxious,” Mourad added.

Homeland Security Investigations’ Detroit office even shared these images on X with the following caption:

“Working to apprehend immigration violators in Michigan and Ohio.”

Overview:

Nearly 1,000 people were arrested by ICE nationally on Sunday alone, which suggests that activity has increased. In contrast, ICE apprehended just 2,234 persons in Detroit alone for the entire year of 2024.

Additionally, the deportation procedure has evolved.

Next steps:

The Department of Homeland Security increased its use of a procedure known as “expedited removal,” which eliminates the need to appear before a court before being deported, with effect from January 21.

“These vehicles are visible to us. Calls are coming in. People are being taken into custody. There is ICE out here. Know your rights and use caution,” Mourad said.
