Iconic convenience store closing third location in US city this year – note on door sparked ominous warning for shoppers
The closing of a third shop in the same city this month has been confirmed by a well-known convenience store.
There were few things left on the shelves when customers came, and a warning letter explaining the shutdown was posted on the door.
For basic groceries, inhabitants of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania’s Center City District frequently visit the adjacent Wawa convenience stores.
Wawa was first established as Wawa Dairy in Pennsylvania in 1902 before evolving into the company it is today, with more than 1,000 convenience stores—the bulk of which also have petrol stations—spread over ten East Coast states.
The business is renowned for offering a large assortment of goods to clients and for having a fully functional kitchen for “Built-To-Order” meals and beverages.
Nevertheless, the Wawa location at 16th and Ranstead in Center City will shortly be permanently closed to patrons.

The local NBC station, WCAU, has announced that the convenience shop would close on December 8.
“We apologize, this location is closing on Sunday, December 8, 2024,” the Wawa’s window sign said.
In the future, Wawa advised patrons to visit the other stores at 1707 Arch Street and 912-916 Walnut Street.
Local consumer Ci’Yon Tribble expressed disappointment with the announcement, claiming that the convenience shop was walkable for locals and offered jobs.
“Some folks are carless. “This city is walkable,” he informed the outlet.
“And we don’t want to get Wawa by taking an Uber. Additionally, it gives people jobs.
TEST TERMINATED
According to Wawa, the closing shop was a trial test of a different business idea and was smaller than conventional convenience stores.
A representative told WCAU that the closure appeared to be the result of the test failing.
“16th and Ranstead store initially opened in 2020 as a pilot test of a smaller urban store concept, which also included a walk-up window,” they stated.
“However, due to its limited size, we have determined that we are not able to provide the same kind of in-store experience and full Wawa offer that customers expect.”
Wawa Locations By State
Wawa currently operates more than 1,000 gas stations and convenience stores in at least ten states, and by 2025, it plans to open more.
- Alabama
- Delaware
- Florida
- Georgia
- Maryland
- New Jersey
- North Carolina
- Pennsylvania
- Virginia
- Washington DC
Wawa further stated that all workers at the Center City convenience shop that was closing were given offers of employment at other neighboring sites.
TREND CONTINUES
In 2024, it will be the third Wawa store in Philadelphia to close.
Since 2020, there have been nine closures in the city.
These locations gave a number of other justifications for their decision, such as pandemic-related sales declines, thievery, and safety concerns.
Wawa has a whole section on its website devoted to future store openings and expansion plans, despite the closures in Philadelphia.
North Carolina hosted the grand debuts of the most recent new stores.

Additionally, Wawa announced last year that it intends to open 15 new stores in 2025 and 10 more in 2026.
Nevertheless, in October, Cherry Hill, New Jersey, locals witnessed another Wawa shutdown after nearly 50 years.
