Identified: Suspect Allegedly Involved in Robbing Woman in Wheelchair, NOPD Reports

DEBARYLIFE – Searchers are looking for a guy who allegedly stole a wheelchair-bound woman’s pocketbook from around her neck on Canal Street at Bourbon Street.

“An unknown black male approached the victim while she was seated in her wheelchair,” stated the preliminary police report.

According to detectives, they have now identified the man.

The NOPD issued a news release stating, “New Orleans Police are asking the public’s assistance with locating… Bernard Joseph Smith (shown), Black guy, DOB 02/09/1984, height 5′ 1″, and weight 112 pounds.”

It was a little before 6:30 a.m. on Memorial Day.

“Anyone with information about the crime or the subject is asked to call Eighth District detectives at 504-658-6080 or to anonymously call Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111.”

Smith’s arrest warrant is now active.
