Incredible 2,000-year-old stone mask found at ancient ‘Pyramid of the Sun’ has people making stunning Hollywood link

An classic Hollywood film from the 1990s has been linked to the incredible discovery of a 2000-year-old mask at the base of a pyramid in Mexico.

Archaeologists rummaged through a tunnel constructed nearly a century ago to find the wealth at the Pyramid of the Sun.

Researchers found the green serpentine face covering in the bedrock of one of Mexico’s most striking monuments.

It was the first of its kind discovered in the area, and the people who lived there in the past believed it to have been a part of a ceremony.

Mind-bending shots of Carrey’s green mouth in various twisted configurations were included in The Mask, which also starred Cameron Diaz.

The Pyramid of the Sun is located at Teotihuacan, a well-known archaeological site in southern Mexico.

The site, located about northeast of Mexico City, was inhabited as early as 100 BC.

The Aztecs gave it its name, and it remained a city for hundreds of years before its citizens are thought to have constructed the pyramid in the year 100 AD.

When researchers dug down a tunnel that archaeologists had constructed in the 1930s, they discovered the mask.

In addition, they discovered three serpentine person sculptures, animal bones, and broken pieces of clay pottery.

Teotihuacan was crowded with 200,000 inhabitants at its height.

“These massive offering complexes constitute the sacred heart of the city of Teotihuacn, the reason why everyone saw it as the mecca of the civilization,” stated Vernica Ortega, director of the Integral Conservation Project for the Plaza of the Moon.

“What can be found inside them will help unravel the relationship this ancient metropolis had with other regions of Mesoamerica.”
