What is Causing Gasoline Prices to Rise?

The national average is $3.56, up 21 cents from a month ago and six cents from a year ago.

In December 2023, the average gasoline price was $3.15.

Gas prices normally rise from February to March. Between 2021 and 2024, petrol prices increased by up to 71 cents. The AAA reported that prices are rising due to a combination of ominous abroad news, increased local gasoline demand, and an increase in oil prices to the mid-$80s per barrel.

“Renewed Ukrainian attacks on Russia’s oil infrastructure and rising Middle Eastern tensions have recently pushed up oil prices,” AAA spokesperson Andrew Gross stated in the report. “And with the cost of oil accounting for roughly 60% of what we pay at the pump, there will likely be some upward pressure on prices.”

The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported that gas consumption increased while total domestic gasoline supplies declined.
