Israel’s Mossad probe disappearance of Rabbi in UAE amid fears he may have been kidnapped in ‘terror incident’

Mossad, the Israeli intelligence service, is looking into a rabbi’s abduction after learning of a “terrorist incident”.

Since Thursday, Zvi Kogan, a Moldovan-Israeli national, has been missing in Abu Dhabi.

According to Kogan’s family, they haven’t heard from him since Wednesday.

The Chabad representative in the United Arab Emirates is Mr. Kogan.

Israel’s security and intelligence services have been looking into the rabbi’s disappearance, according to the prime minister’s office.

“An active investigation has been underway in the country since his disappearance, and Mossad has provided information indicating that this is a terrorist incident,” a spokeswoman stated.

“Israeli security and intelligence organizations, concerned for Kogan’s safety and wellbeing, have been working tirelessly on this case.”

The National Security Council urges Israelis to visit the United Arab Emirates only for very necessary purposes, the prime minister’s office recently reminded the public.

It should be mentioned, they said, that the National Security Council has already issued a Level 3 travel warning (moderate threat) for the United Arab Emirates, advising against non-essential travel and suggesting that individuals already in the country take extra precautions.

Israelis have been cautioned in a travel advise to “hide anything that could identify you as Israeli or Jewish in major cities, or locations where demonstrations or protests are taking place.”

A request for comment on Saturday was not immediately answered by Emirati officials.

The incident was not immediately reported by state-run media in the United Arab Emirates, an authoritarian federation of seven sheikhdoms on the Arabian Peninsula that is home to Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Despite the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza and Israel’s ground invasion of Lebanon, the United Arab Emirates has upheld its 2020 formal recognition of Israel.

Although Iran was not mentioned in the Israeli communication, Iranian intelligence agents have previously abducted people in the United Arab Emirates.

What is the Chabad movement?

A Hasidic Jewish organization, the Chabad movement centers on religious ideas such as God, the soul, and the significance of the Jewish commandments.

Rabbi Shneur Zalman founded it in what is now Belarus in 1775. It is among the biggest outposts of Jewish organizations.

Although Chabad has several distinctive customs, its behaviors are largely in line with those of the larger Orthodox community.

Chabad stated that 4,900 emissary families were running 3,500 organizations in 100 nations and territories as of 2021. In addition to large cities, Chabad also conducts business in smaller towns and rural regions.
