Jerry Jones makes Mike McCarthy contract decision as Dallas Cowboys open contract negotiations ahead of free agency
According to reports, the Dallas Cowboys have taken the next step in their decision about head coach Mike McCarthy’s future.
The Cowboys, led by Jerry Jones, will start contract talks with McCarthy, whose five-year contract expires next Tuesday.
As McCarthy’s future has been scrutinized, Dallas had a 7–10 season with more ups than downs.
The Cowboys’ season ended last weekend, but the team hasn’t made any public announcements on the 61-year-old’s condition this week.
Nonetheless, it seems that Jones, the general manager and owner of the Cowboys, is hoping to resolve the dispute with McCarthy soon.
Jones and McCarthy are anticipated to start contract negotiations that would retain him in Arlington, according to NFLNetwork’s Tom Pelissero.

Jones and McCarthy’s talks are said to take place following the Cowboys’ discussions over the past few days about the 2024 season and the team’s future.
Before Tuesday, Dallas will have the opportunity to sign McCarthy to a new deal.
The former Green Bay Packers coach is free to discuss head coaching openings with other teams if an agreement isn’t made by then.
The Cowboys allegedly turned down the Chicago Bears’ request for an interview with McCarthy this week.
Additionally, starting next week, the assistant coaches for the Cowboys will be able to take on additional roles.
McCarthy guided Dallas to two division crowns and three 12-5 seasons while he was there.
But his playoff record with the Cowboys is 1-3.
The Jones family decided to forego an extension for McCarthy going into the 2024–25 season since the squad was reeling after a shocking blowout loss to the Packers the previous season.
Dallas had a poor season, but McCarthy missed the majority of it because of a hamstring injury that sidelined his starting quarterback, Dak Prescott.
McCarthy’s record with the Cowboys is 49-35.
Two one-and-done trips to the Wild Card round have been headed by him.
Dallas’ 2024 season ended with the lowest record since McCarthy joined the team for the first time in 2020.
