JJ Watt defends Deebo Samuel after ‘never before seen’ act that left San Francisco 49ers star open for punishment

EX-NFL star JJ Watt has defended Deebo Samuel after the 49ers wideout grabbed his own teammate by the throat in a sideline scuffle.

The San Francisco receiver clashed with long-snapper Taybor Pepper during Sunday’s win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Samuel confronted teammate Jake Moody after the kicker missed his third field goal attempt in the 23-20 win.

Pepper stepped in to defend Moody, with Samuel appearing to push him away by the throat before his hand caught Moody’s helmet.

Watt joined ESPN’s Pat McAfee Show on Wednesday to discuss the fallout to the incident.

And the former NFL Defensive Player of the Year believes Samuel’s frustration was borne out of a desire to win.

“I have not seen the throat grab on your own teammate for a while,” Watt said.

“Trying to remember the last time I’ve seen it general.

“But I don’t mind players holding their own guys accountable.”

Watt went on to clarify his comments, adding kickers had a “tough job”.

“I think kickers have a tough job and it’s extremely clear if they do or not accomplish their job,” he continued.

“You either put it through the uprights or you don’t. Nobody knows more than that guy [if he missed].”

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan addressed the incident in his pre-game press conference on Sunday.

“Regardless of what happens, you don’t throw a punch,” Shanahan said.

“And you see what happens when that happens.”

Samuel finished the contest with five receptions and tallied 62 yards.

Moody hit the winning field goal late in the contest to give the 49ers a crucial victory.

Deebo will not face internal discipline for his role in the scuffle, with no further action taken from the NFL.

“We squashed it and we’re good,” Shanahan said on Monday.

“I think it was a little bit of an overreaction.

“You never want Deebo to throw a baby punch at anybody on our own team, but he also wasn’t saying anything bad to Jake.

“He was meeting him on the field telling him to lock in, the same thing I’ll tell an offensive player who just dropped some balls or made some penalties.”
