DETROIT (FOX 2):Detroit officials announced the most recent funding boost for the construction of the Joe Louis Greenway, a 27-mile path designed for bicyclists and pedestrians to use in and around the city.
A portion of the greenway on the northern portion of the trail, which passes through Highland Park and Hamtramck, as well as on previously paved paths like the Dequindre Cut and the famous riverwalk, will be funded in part by federal monies.
Overview:
Although the greenway will not be finished for many years, the city, the Joe Louis Greenway Partnership, the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy, Hamtramck, Highland Park, and other organizations are continuously filling in the blanks.
After it is finished, the route will run across the city without interruption, going beneath roads, beside the Detroit River, and through other communities and cities.
The project will cost about $300 million in total.
The partnership’s executive director, Leona Medley, referred to it as a “project about neighborhoods.”
“It reminds us that our neighborhoods, our people have a future, and everyone does have a future., and it’s a way to really strengthen our connection with our sister cities,” she remarked on Wednesday.
Local viewpoint:
The greenway between Woodward Avenue and Dequindre Street will be built thanks to a $10 million funding from the Active Transportation Infrastructure Investment Program, authorities said this week.
The Second Ebenezer Church will be one important location it passes. Additionally, it will be used to construct a bridge and pathway beneath I-75, which is one of the main obstacles to a completely connected loop.
Additionally, the city was awarded a $2.5 million grant to design the greenway between Patton Park and Romanowski Park on Lonyo Street.
