Comerica Park with John Keating.

(FOX 2):At the conclusion of the hockey season, a longtime Detroit Red Wings and Tigers commentator who is frequently heard before and after the team’s games will be retiring.

John Keating told supporters on social media that he had decided earlier this year to retire from television.

Jeff Byle, my supervisor and a lifelong friend, gently reminded me when we went out for a ginger ale a few years back, “You tell us when you want to be done.” You deserve that.

What does he think of the opportunity? “Believe me. In this business? That’s the best it gets.

“It was a wistful getting through the end of the Tigers season and now that the Red Wings season is ongoing, it just feels like it’s time to share the decision.”

For decades, Keating has represented Detroit sports in the NHL and MLB, taking home over a dozen Emmys while working for FOX Sports Detroit and then Bally Sports.

In addition, he occasionally provided play-by-play commentary and color analysis.

Throughout his 45-year career, he witnessed some of the most iconic events in Detroit sports history, including as the Pistons’ 2004 title and four Stanley Cups won by the Red Wings.
