Labour bumper pay deal for train drivers could cause Christmas travel havoc
The Transport Secretary has acknowledged that the massive pay deal for train drivers will have a negative impact on transport during the Christmas season.
Heidi Alexander acknowledged that fewer people are volunteering for Sunday hours as a result of the three-year agreement, which included a sizable back payment.
Although many drivers and crews are now opting to spend the holiday season at home, train services still rely largely on staff filling in on weekends.
“I’m hearing that some drivers and train crew are saying that we don’t feel the need to be working on the Sunday in the same way as they would have done previously because there was that lump sum, which was a back payment,” she told the BBC.
Ms. Alexander emphasized that since the back pay only occurs once, this won’t be an issue the following year.
It is said that before the railway is returned to the public, Rail Minister Lord Hendy is considering personnel.
He acknowledged that the government was concerned about Christmas service staffing last week.
Labour was chastised by the Conservatives yesterday for befriending union barons and abandoning the British people.
According to Shadow Transport Secretary Gareth Bacon, Labour is disappointing passengers and creating Christmas misery by continuously caving in to its union paymasters. This will surely become an unwanted and enduring aspect of the New Year.
It comes after research revealed that problems with junction points have caused delays for rail passengers around 15,000 times during the previous five years.
